Cator Park

How does the signage strategy at Cator Park explain the rich new landscape?

It was critical that those visiting the park were provided with the information needed to understand their rich landscape to instil ownership and to encourage them to care for this new place. In complement to a functional wayfinding system provided by Berkeley Homes. HTA Communications designed two interpretation panels that playfully illustrate the history and ecology of the area.

The first sign is located on Cranfield Walk, the main route past a new exemplar playground. This sign describes Kidbrooke’s Anglo Saxon origins, its 50 years as an RAF base, and the post-war optimism of the Ferrier Estate. The sign concludes with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Berkeley Homes and the GLA’s shared ambition for an exemplary sustainable neighbourhood. The second sign celebrates the natural interventions to the landscape including the sustainable urban drainage strategy, the wetlands, wildflower meadow and the uplift in wildlife attracted to the area due to the redesign.

How has communication design been used to encourage local people to make full use of Cator Park?

At strategic locations, 12 brass plaques were introduced with a raised surface depicting new plants and wildlife. A corresponding map was created for use by the local community. Children are encouraged to move around the park to discover the plaques, making rubbings of them when they find them.
