Soap Works

What architectural features are included to balance the industrial and residential elements at Soap Works?

With an extant industrial heritage around the site, and a project goal of retaining local businesses within the area, the proposal invigorates the existing 1750sqm of light industrial space whilst generating an additional 124 homes and ground floor ‘spill-out’ cafe. The building includes three floors dedicated to light industrial and commercial uses, with the residential component rising above to 18 storeys. Set-in shoulder elements help reduce the building's bulk while maximizing dual aspects, allowing for more natural light and views. Additionally, podium terraces at various levels provide communal amenity spaces for residents and much-needed urban greening. These design strategies ensure that the development remains functional for industrial use while offering high-quality residential living spaces that encourage community interaction and sustainability.

How does Soap Work’s architectural design reflect the industrial heritage of the area?

Soap Works incorporates design elements inspired by the 'brick fields' and 'motor works' factories, as well as the 'soap suds' launderettes that once served the theatres of the East End, reflecting the area's industrial heritage. This is achieved using mottled brickwork, Crittall-style glazing, and terracotta panelling on the building's façade. These materials and design elements pay homage to the site's rich history while providing a modern and cohesive aesthetic that bridges the past and present.
